RAG document chat versus an ordinary chatbot
A general chatbot responds from its model and conversation context. Retrieval-augmented document chat first searches selected source material and uses the retrieved passages as evidence.
What retrieval adds
Retrieval narrows the context to passages from the documents you selected. Hybrid search can combine semantic similarity with exact term matching, which helps with both concepts and specific names, numbers or phrases.
What citations add
Citations make the evidence path inspectable. You can open the original document, navigate to the page and compare the answer with the selected passage rather than accepting a fluent response on trust.
What it does not solve
Retrieval does not guarantee that a document is complete, that extraction is perfect or that an interpretation is logically correct. Weak evidence should remain an insufficient-evidence result, not become a confident claim.
How Citely approaches the workflow
Citely combines scoped document conversations, retrieval, bounded answer generation, citation validation and original-file viewers in one workspace. The product is in beta and should be reviewed accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between RAG and an ordinary chatbot?
An ordinary chatbot answers from its model and the conversation. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) first searches selected documents and uses the retrieved passages as evidence for the answer, which makes the answer traceable to sources.
Does RAG stop AI hallucinations?
It reduces reliance on unsupported model knowledge but does not eliminate errors. Extraction can be incomplete and interpretations can be wrong, so cited passages should still be checked.
Does Citely use RAG?
Yes. Citely combines scoped document conversations, hybrid semantic and keyword retrieval, bounded answer generation, citation validation and original-file viewers.
